Here are the statistics, showing the latest Canadian meteorite ranks as #22 in mass on the TKW scale. It is the second largest stony meteorite FIND in Canada, after Vulcan, but not the second largest meteorite found in Canada, nor the second largest stony meteorite found in Canada. The TKW of Iron Creek was less than originally reported (386 lbs). How do we know this? The meteorite was re-weighed in 1999 and presently the main mass is now 145.25 kilos. Not enough has been distributed to account for 30 kilos, nor is there enough cutting to suggest that amount was removed, in fact far less is indicated, maybe as little as a kilogram. Here's my e-mail to Monica Grady of June 1, 1999, referred to in the 5th Edition Natural History Museum Catalogue: ========================================================= >Dear Monica: As a result of recent discussions, the Curator at the >Provincial Museum of Alberta, Ron Mussieux, has confirmed that the weight of >the main mass of the Iron Creek, Alberta iron meteorite is now about 320 lbs >or 145.25 kilos. The original mass is recorded everywhere as 386 lbs or >over 175 kilos. As there is no evidence that 66 lbs of the meteorite has >been distributed elsewhere, i.e. far less is recorded in other places and >there is no evidence of where 30 kilos could have been removed, it appears >that the original weight was in error. A consequence of this is that the >Madoc, Ontario iron meteorite at 167.5 kilos original mass now is the >heaviest/largest found in Canada. > >Please contact Ron at <RMussieux_at_mcd.gov.ab.ca> to confirm this for revision >in your catalogue. > >Thanks. > >RKH ====================================================== The listing of Canadian meteorites based solely on TKWs is, for the top 25, as of today: Bruderheim - Madoc - Iron Creek - Abee - Springwater - Dresden(Ontario) - Osseo - Peace River - Manitouwabing - Hagersville - St-Robert - Vulcan - Shelburne - Edmonton (Canada) - Skookum - Millarville - Beaver Creek - Bruno - Mayerthorpe - Annaheim - Tagish Lake (?) - Elm Creek - Welland - Belly River - Hodgeville - Kyle (Last two both 7kg).
