AZ is not synonymous with Mohave Desert. So, Dave's description is correct. There appear to be at least 3 geomorphic provinces in Mohave County - Colorado Plateau (which is immediately to the east of Gold Basin), the Sonoran Desert (which is along the Colorado River), and the Mojave Desert (which Gold Basin is a part of). As you can see, these provinces are more separated by elevation, than by anything else. Although Mojave and Mohave are supposed to be synonymous, I find it curious that Arizona web pages use the term Mohave, while California-related web sites use the term Mojave. This may add to the misconception that there is a Mohave Desert in Arizona, as well as, a Mojave Desert in California. Bob V. P.S. - The border that separates the Mojave Desert from the Great Basin Desert is much more "fuzzy". The region can be separated climatically into hot and cold deserts. The lower, hot, Mojave Desert receives most of its precipitation as RAIN, and the higher, cold, Great Basin Desert receives most of its moisture as SNOW. This distinction is complicated by a strong east-west elevation gradient that allows more summer rains from the Gulf of Mexico to reach the eastern regions of the Great Basin and Mojave than their western regions. For those of you who are still reading this post, allow me to say that, contained in the above description, is information that has much more than a "casual-relationship" to meteorite recovery. In fact, it is very relevant. --------------- Original Message ----------------- [meteorite-list] Falls, finds, Mohave desert Dave Mouat dmouat_at_dri.edu Wed, 02 Jan 2002 14:07:47 -0800 Dear All The Mojave Desert comprises parts of four states (Calif., Nevada, Utah, and Arizona) with more than half located in California. Sometimes, one refers to the Mojave Desert as being that part which is located just in California but most of the time we refer to its entire geography. Now, I'm sure that Sam is just interested in the desert known as "Mojave", but most tourists or even meteorite hunters might not be able to distinguish it from the contiguous parts of adjoining deserts including the Great Basin and the Sonora Deserts.
