                              IMPACT TECTONISM

                     Mora, Sweden, 31 May - 3 June 2002

  With a pre-workshop excursion and two post-workshop excursions to several
             proven and suggested impact structures in Sweden.

ANNOUNCEMENT

This workshop of the ESF IMPACT programme will focus on tectonics of impact
structures and will be located at the town of Mora within the Siljan Impact
Structure, the largest known impact crater in Western Europe. In this
workshop, lectures will be combined with field studies at nearby sites of
the Siljan crater.

The Siljan meeting will cover the following themes:

- IMPACT CRATERING MECHANISMS

- KINEMATICS AND DYNAMICS OF CRATER COLLAPSE

- NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL MODELLING OF CRATER FORMATION

- RHEOLOGY OF TARGET ROCKS

- FORMATION OF PSEUDOTACHYLITES AND SHATTER CONES

- STRUCTURAL TRACING OF THE TRANSIENT CRATER THROUGH THE MODIFICATION STAGE

- POST-MODIFICATION-STAGE TECTONIC DEFORMATION OF IMPACT STRUCTURES

- GEOCHEMICAL SIGNATURES OF IMPACT-INDUCED TECTONICS

ACCOMMODATION AND TRANSPORT:

Acommodation will be in the hotel and hostel TRE HOTELL i MORA in the town
of Mora. Rates are from 310 SEK (ca. 31 EUR) for the hostel to 630 SEK (ca.
63 EUR) for the hotel.
The hostel Kristineberg (cheapest option) has 32 rooms, all with shower and
wc. The rooms have 1-4 beds. Sauna & social rooms completes the hostel.
The hotel Kung Gösta has 47 bedrooms and a relax part with indoor pool,
sauna, solarium, billiards & social rooms.
The hotel St.Mikael (most expensive option) is a small high standard hotel
with 26 rooms, all of them with shower, wc, tv, telephone, hair dryer and
refrigerator.

Train connections from Stockholm C to Mora run every 2 hours with rates from
170 SEK (ca. 17 EUR) to 260 SEK (ca. 26 EUR).

MEETING FEES:

The registration fee is 1 500 SEK (ca. 150 EUR), which includes the abstract
volume, excursion guide to Siljan, all meals and the excursions to the
Siljan crater. The conference fee does not include accomodation. Pre- and
post-workshop excursions are paid by the respective participants.

ABSTRACTS:
The abstract should be maximum 1 page, with figures and references included.
For abstract specifications see attached sheet. No print-only contributions
are accepted. Abstracts should be sent both as hard copy and electronically
(e-mail attachment or diskette), to Ilka von Dalwigk (address below). The
deadline for submitting the abstracts is March 15, 2002.
Extended abstracts (max. 2 pages) will be published in a special issue of
GFF (journal of the Geological Society of Sweden).
Deadline for submitting the extended abstracts is August 1, 2002. No
print-only contributions are accepted.

PROCEEDINGS:
The proceedings of the meeting will be published in Lecture Notes in Earth
Sciences (Springer Verlag). Details about
deadline and manuscript preparation will be provided during the conference.
No print-only contributions are accepted.

FUNDING:
Limited funding for registration, accomodation and travel will be available
from ESF-IMPACT funds. Priority will be given to lecture/poster presenting
participants from countries with organisations financially supporting the
IMPACT Programme (i.e. Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland,
France, Germany, Hungary, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland, United Kingdom).

Please fill in the Registration Form and return it no later than March 1 .
Abstract deadline is March 15, 2002.

Third circular will be out in spring 2002.

Pre-workshop excursion to Malå - Gallejaure.

May 31:

Arrival at the Tre Hotell i Mora and welcome reception, evening meal.

June 1:
Workshop lectures and poster presentations; field studies at several
locations of the Siljan crater.

June 2:
Workshop lectures and poster presentations; field studies at several
locations of the Siljan crater.

June 3:
Workshop lectures and poster presentations; field studies at several
locations of the Siljan crater.

June 4:
Departure from Siljan & post workshop excursions:

June 4-6:
First option: 2 days excursion to Lockne (over 7 km marine crater) and
Dellen (ca. 20 km terrestrial crater). Registration deadline for this option
is March 1 2002. Registration after this date is possible, but at an
increased price.

June 4:
Second option: 1 day field trip to suspected breccia sites of the Uppland
structure on the way to Stockholm and study drillcores from Tvären in
Stockholm.

        The abstract should be a maximum of 1 A4 page (210mm * 297mm),
figures and references included.

        The font should be: Helvetica, 12 pt.

        All margins are 23 mm (left, right, top, bottom).

        Single spacing.

        The title in bold letters, 14 pt.

        Authors names in capital letters, regular helvetica, 12 pt.

        Full postal and e-mail address of the authors should be given on a
separate line.

        Digital text files should be compatible with Word 7 or Word-Perfect
7.0 formats.

        The figures should be in separate digital files ( e.g. JPG, TIF, EPS
or GIF for bitmaps and e.g. FREEHAND or CDR for drawings).
