I receieve posts as a digest, so I'm sorry if this has
already made it out.

If you know the high bid on something, you can be mean
and raise the going price to the exact amount that the
high bidder has bid, which would raise his price, but
you wouldn't be obligated to buy the piece. Another
scenario is that someone who might have bid $10.00
more would realize there is no point, and so would not
bid anymore. This would lower the net price, making a
worse deal for the seller.
