Perth Observatory astronomer Peter Birch said the two-second flash was caused by a rock the size of a cricket ball burning up as it entered the atmosphere about 10.15pm. Sightings were reported in Falcon, Kings Park, Ascot and Kallaroo. Some callers reported it as a flare sighting. The flash was spotted by the Perth Airport tower which said it came from a north-eastern direction. Mr Birch said it was the third meteor to enter WA skies in a fortnight. It was unlikely the meteor would have reached the ground. Received on Wed 17 Oct 2001 11:49:02 AM PDT |
