Dick, a well spoken meteoriticist who's been at it quite a while, delivered a visual cornicopia of slides with stories to match as well as a table covered with samples spanning the three main classifications and examples of achondrites. The cherry on the cake was seeing, for the first time ever, all four (yes count 'em, four) Oregon meteorites under one roof. These included an~3kg. slice of Kalamath Falls, ~75g Willamette, ~75g Sams Valley, and a beautifully brecciated fragment of Salem sporting a remarkable 2mm jet black fusion crust! The only thing missing was Port Orford. There was a lack of fellow collectors and the majority of the attendees were folks that were around when Willamette was still sitting in Oregon but they lent a unique perspective the event. All in all, it was a fun time, informative to everyone, with lots of hands on and good storytelling. Dick, if you're on the list, thank you and anyone else who has the opportunity to avail themselves to one of his presentations, go. Rob Wesel Received on Thu 17 May 2001 08:52:07 PM PDT |
