Just finished watching a special on Adelies Penguins in Antarctica.
It seems that during the nesting season thousands of penguins compete
for nest building material, specifically small stones and pebbles. They
will even travel great distances waddling along looking for the perfect
stones! They compete for the best pebbles. All this is very
metabolically expensive considering that these fellows burn twice the
amount of calories to walk a given distance compared to other animals.
So what your left with at the end of the season is hundreds of small
stone cairns composed of Antarctic rocks. Cute! Real cute, anyone
thinking what I'm thinking?
In Nortons book 1st volume there is a great quote that seems
appropriate:
pp.315
"There had to be a natural mechanism that somehow concentrated
meteorites from widely scattered landing points on the ice shelf."
