As one of those folks that always gets asked to chair, preside(nt), = secretary, treasure, or simply organize, organizations... thus some = practical experience.... here are a few ideas. An organization is either started or is not. There is no pro or con = discussion to this process. The quality of the leadership and members, = the quality of the purpose, and the quality of the service of the = organization will determine whether it becomes a meaningful entity or = disappears. An organization will be most easily accepted if it's stated goal from = the very beginning is to be 'OF SERVICE TO THE (STARBELLIED) COMMUNITY' = rather than to provide regulation or such. Look at it as associating (joining together), for friendship and = service, a group of people with the intent and objective of listening to = and being responsive to the needs of the people of the meteorite = community, whether amateur, professional, commercial, or scientific. The actual (action oriented) objectives of the organization then become = directly and flexibly responsive to the needs of the members. So, in practical terms: Associate first with this rather broad objective, recognizing that you = don't really know exactly what you are going to be doing (remember, this = is a long term organization for the betterment of the community through = service rather than a short term task force - specific goals can be = addressed later under specialized commity or task forces... etc). = Accept all interested members and give them all equal vote. Alow a time = for people to join. Create an open dedicated email forum... with chat = room for monthly meetings of all interested members (this is the most = equal way that folks around the world can basically be in the same room = - the alternatives, mail and meetings, are slow and expensive = respectively and will exclude far more people) Print letterhead or = whatever. 19$ or whatever per member annualy to pay for it and all the = phone calls and stamps. Define and vote on your leadership (who, and how)... remember, the = leadership of such an organization is the servant of the body, not vice = versa. Whoever tries it is going to discover that it is a lot of hard = work. The only effective actions will be those that reflect the wishes = of the community, as the community will balk or resist on anything that = isn't so. Don't be too afraid of potential abuse of power, as the = leader or leadership of an organization never really has any, anyway... = they are servants. Draft and vote on a charter statement along the lines of "to be 'OF = SERVICE TO THE (STARBELLIED) COMMUNITY'" If everyone can't agree on it, = it is too specific, too biased, or too broad. You'll know the instant = you get it right. Next listen. What do we need or want as a community that an individual = can't provide as well as a group can. What do we want to support as a = group that an individual or scattered interests can't as efficiently = support, and what do we want to build or create for the future as a = group that, as indiviuals, we can't as easily build. Create and discuss a list of potential goals or objectives or needs to = be addressed at the monthly or so discussions. Distribute a newsletter = with minutes to all registered members via email of each monthly online = meeting. Have an annual meeting (social) once a year or so, starting = with the second year, where folks can meet face to face. Create and accept ideas, refine them to goals, deliniate them as plans, = deligate, accept volunteers, act. Hope this helps. No, in advance, I won't be secretary or anything else but a member. -Robert Beauford : ) ------=_NextPart_000_0075_01C0B2C0.3C916380 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content=3D"text/html; charset=3Diso-8859-1" = http-equiv=3DContent-Type> <META content=3D"MSHTML 5.00.2314.1000" name=3DGENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=3D#ffffff> <DIV><FONT size=3D2>Ari and all,</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2>I'm interested.</FONT></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2>As one of those folks that always gets asked to = chair,=20 preside(nt), secretary, treasure, or simply organize, organizations... = thus some=20 practical experience.... here are a few ideas.</FONT></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2>An organization is either started or is not. = There is no=20 pro or con discussion to this process.
