The Sun, high overhead, subdues shadows and brings out variations in the brightness of surface materials. This illumination reveals several ring-shaped bright patches, about 60 meters (200 feet) across, on the inside walls of small craters. The whole scene is about 1.4 kilometers (0.9 miles) across. -------------------------------------------------------- Built and managed by The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Maryland, NEAR-Shoemaker was the first spacecraft launched in NASA's Discovery Program of low-cost, small-scale planetary missions.
