At the airport north of Kailua-Kona, there is a modest museum dedicated to the memory of Lt. Col. Ellison Onizuka, a Kealakekua, Hawaii native and one of the crew members who died in 1986 aboard the Challenger. The museum is largely aimed at kids, lots of interactive educational displays, etc, but they did have a cabinet with several meteorite specimens (definitely suffering from a combination of the tropical locale and lack of curation) - there were also some pretty familiar meteorite books alongside: http://www.jgregory.wilson.org/cabinet.jpg http://www.jgregory.wilson.org/rustydiablo.jpg http://www.jgregory.wilson.org/rocksfromspace.jpg The "piece de resistance" was a 177.3 gram piece of Lunar Sample 74255, obtained in the Apollo 17 mission. http://www.jgregory.wilson.org/lunardisplay.jpg http://www.jgregory.wilson.org/moonrock.jpg I asked how much they wanted for it, but they were unamused. ;-) Aloha!
