[meteorite-list] hot meteorites

I think we can all agree that before the meteorite enters the Earth's
atmosphere it is exteremly cold. Friction with the atmosphere will
certainly heat it up, and do so very quickly and for only a short time.
Could the many meteorites that have exploded before they hit the ground
been the result of this 'quick-heating' of a cold object much like ice
cracking when warm water is poured over it?
