          First Braking Maneuver a Success
          February 12, 2001

NEAR Shoemaker has completed its first braking maneuver,
a 2.5-minute burst from its small thrusters begun with
the spacecraft 3 miles (5 kilometers) above Eros. The
spacecraft will collect and transmit close-up images of
the surface for the remainder of its descent, capturing
features as small as 4 inches (10 centimeters) across.
