Dear Brad and List...
Ummm...attention Ari.
This seems to have been discussed at length by acadamians and list newbies in
the past and may rate listing to the FAQ list, aye Ari?

I think the general learned responce was that in outer space, the temp is about
250 below zero ( my mind fails me on exact temp.) and that when the entry into
the atmosphere is so fast in seconds that the ablation process ( see "Rocks
from Space, page 49 quote..."and the ablated material carries away the
accumulating surface heat..." ) takes away the hot out side as fast or faster
than the heat from entry can enter the inside of the extrememly cold rock. And
thus they fall "cold".
I think asking the Alabama woman that was struck when one came through her roof
offered first hand...err "leg" insite. Also see Peekskill page 87, "still
warm".

My camaro feels pretty hot, just like a supersonic jet. Neither I nor the jet
pilot have barbecued yet...and my present favorite example is to put ones lips
on the window next time you are flying over the rockies in an airliner...for
reverse effect, place your lips on a black car that has sat in the direct sun
for a few hours.

If serious, ask the Nakhla dog who will not speak...Or check out all the hot
cars with flames on the fenders.
Arf!
