Pilot treated to meteor light show
New Zealand Herald
December 29, 2000

The pilot of a commercial airliner flying over the West Coast this afternoon
was treated to a 15 minute light show as what appears to be a meteor
crashed through Earth's atmosphere.

A number of people phoned police in Christchurch and Greymouth as intense
white and orange lights blazed across the skies this afternoon [Dec. 29].

The lights were followed by a dust trail, which a spokesman at the Mt John
Observatory in Tekapo says is typical of a meteorite.

The pilot of a 737 jet en route to Australia reported seeing the blazing
lights at 38,000 feet
