                               Typically Eros

NEAR Shoemaker took this picture of a rather "typical"
part of Eros on December 16, 2000, from an orbital
altitude of 37 kilometers (23 miles). This view captures
the essential characteristics of a high-resolution Eros
image: the area is densely pocked with craters wider
than 200 meters (660 feet), but the density of smaller
craters is low and, at smaller scales, boulders dominate
the surface. The whole scene is about 1 kilometer (0.6
          miles) across.

Built and managed by The Johns Hopkins University
          Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Maryland,
NEAR-Shoemaker was the first spacecraft launched in
          NASA's Discovery Program of low-cost, small-scale
planetary missions. See the NEAR web site for more
          details (http://near.jhuapl.edu) .
