A Last Look From High Up

NEAR Shoemaker obtained this view of Eros on December
          11, 2000, from a 193-kilometer (120-mile) altitude.
Taken during an imaging sequence for optical navigation,
this picture is among the last of Eros obtained from a
high altitude, showing in perspective a large region of
the asteroid. For the rest of the mission, imaging
science will focus on characterizing the surface at
ever-higher spatial resolutions in order to understand
the small-scale processes that have shaped Eros'
unexpectedly complex surface. The picture covers a
region about 6.2 kilometers (3.9 miles) across.

Built and managed by The Johns Hopkins University
          Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Maryland,
NEAR-Shoemaker was the first spacecraft launched in
          NASA's Discovery Program of low-cost, small-scale
planetary missions. See the NEAR web site for more
          details (http://near.jhuapl.edu) .
