                            Older Than the Hills

NEAR Shoemaker took this picture of Eros on December 9,
          2000, from a 106-kilometer (65-mile) altitude. This part
of the asteroid has several low, elongated hills, which
in this view trend from upper right to lower left. The
density of superimposed craters shows that these hills
are among the older parts of Eros' surface. The picture
covers a region about 4.7 kilometers (2.9 miles) across.
