This part of the asteroid has several low, elongated hills, which in this view trend from upper right to lower left. The density of superimposed craters shows that these hills are among the older parts of Eros' surface. The picture covers a region about 4.7 kilometers (2.9 miles) across. -------------------------------------------------------- Built and managed by The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Maryland, NEAR-Shoemaker was the first spacecraft launched in NASA's Discovery Program of low-cost, small-scale planetary missions.
