Meteor, then. Reentering space junk would have been visible
for at least 5 times as long. Sounds like it had the potential
to drop a stone or two, so you should submit a fireball report.
Your observation coupled with others (preferably south of you)
can help to triangulate the extinction point.

You need to estimate the angular sky location, both in elevation
and azimuth. Azimuth 180 is due south; 225 is due southwest.
To determine the angle above the horizon, hold your fist at
arm's length, thumb on top, and estimate how many fists above
horizontal the meteor was. Start so that the heel of your
fist is at the same height as your eyes; each fist is roughly
10 degrees.
