Amateur asteroid hunters part of new golden age of astronomy
By Allan Coukell for explorezone.com . 09.20.99
Amateur astronomers can make an important contribution to asteroid research,
according to Ian Griffin, director of the Auckland Observatory and Stardome
in New Zealand. Griffin, himself a former professional astronomer, has
established a programme that relies on amateurs to search for previously
unknown asteroids and comets.
Amateur astronomy is entering "a new golden age," says Griffin. “There are
probably less professional astronomers working on asteroid research than
there are staff in your average local McDonald's. And that's not enough to
keep track of these hundreds of thousands of objects."
