Hello,
After reading the numerous posts related to "akaganeite" and/or
"lawrencite", I have come away with a couple of understandings that I'd
like to have confirmed and a couple of questions to be answered. I'm
hoping that the list can help me out.
Understanding #1 This "rust" is due to an interaction of chlorine atoms with
with other components in certain iron meteorites.
Understanding #2 This problem is inherent in only certain iron falls/finds.
Question #1 Is there a list of falls/finds which are known to have this
problem?
Question #2 Is this primarily a problem with slices? My thought is that
the
larger exposed surfaces may contribute to the deterioration.
Question #3 If this affects only certain specimens, is it safe to assume that
one "infected" specimen will not contaminate another?
Thanks,
Dennis
