Hi
I found the following from;
Mandarino, Joseph A.(1999)Fleischer's Glossary of Mineral Species 1999 p2.
Akaganeite (beta)-Fe3+(O,OH,Cl), monoclinic, pseudo tetragonal, compare
Feroxyhyte, Goethite and Lepidocrocite, American Mineralogist; 48, 711(1963),
56, 659(1971), 76, 272-277(1991).
With that listing it is a genuine mineral specimen and has been since 1963.
I do not have the above mentioned American Mineralogist articles. Maybe
somebody out there does.
What all the above means in less technical terms is "an ugly iron stained
chlorinated smear/blob." It is a mineral you would hold in title only as the
name sounds much better then the actual specimen would look.
I hope that helps.
