Re: Tektite/Impactite
Hello all,
Expanding on Bernd's post on the terrestrial/tektite link. In McSween's book
page 242, it is suggested that the kinetic energy for liberating fragments
as in meteorites via volcanic means is inadequate. The energy of rapidly
expanding gases is too small to accelerate fragments to planetary escape
velocities (this means the Moon and Mars). Because of this statement, and
the size of the average lunar meteorite it would seem very unlikely that the
same could deliver glasses (tektites) of equal or more weight, especially in
volume.
