ASTRONOMY NOW, December 1997, News Update, p. 4:
Recent studies of fossil meteorites in marine limestones from Sweden
show that the amount of meteorite material and cosmic dust falling to
Earth 480 million years ago was 100 times greater than it is today. The
excess noble gases found in the limestone have been proved to originate
from cosmic dust rather than mantle material erupted by volcanoes.
According to the paper in SCIENCE, the abundance of extraterrestrial
debris can be explained by a sudden, short lived event such as the
catastrophic break-up of a meteorite parent body in the asteroid belt
(by Peter Bond).
