With the anticipation of a meteoric display in the next
few days, I thought I'd share an image of an article in
"The Gentleman's Magazine", published in August of
1750, which describes a meteor traveling "...about 30
yards from the ground, in a speedy, strait, course,
and with the velocity of a very swift bird......for ten miles
in a direct line..." Science has come a long way,
but it's fun to read a report of a meteor as apparently
understood in the mid-eighteenth century. View at:
