Strewnfields: Hugoton

This post is intended to provide information on strewnfields that have the
possibility of producing more specimens.

Hugoton, Stevens County, Kansas
37 degrees 12' North 101 degrees 29' West
Found in 1927 and recognized in 1936
Brecciated Olivine-bronzite chondrite

7.3 kilos first plowed up in 1927. The main mass of 325 Kg. and 6.8 Kg. of
fragments were recovered by Nininger in 1936. Another stone of 5.5 Kg. was
later found. (adapted from information in the "Catalogue of Meteorites",
1966, The British Museum of Natural History, London.)

An interesting note about this find is that the main mass was continually
hit by tillers, season after season, scattering literally thousands of
fragments over an area of maybe 100 square meters. (from information by H.H
Nininger in a paper, "Meteorite Distribution on the Earth" in the book "The
Moon, Meteorites and Comets",1963, The University of Chicago Press. Chapter
6, page 165.)
