GOLDEN D.C. et al. (1995) Chemistry and mineralogy of oxidation
products on the surface of the Hoba nickel-iron meteorite (Meteoritics
30-4,1995, page 418):

EXPERIMENTIAL

A sample of the oxide layer of the Hoba meteorite was collected in 1991
by M.E. Zolensky. The sample was magnetic, disk-shaped, and 4-6 cm in
diameter. The meteorite-facing side was black, and the soil-facing side
was gray with a coating of calcium carbonate. A 20-30 cm-thick layer of
oxide was present around the base of the meteorite. The oxide layer had
cracks in-filled with calcium carbonate.
