Hello Phill and thank you from "visitor number 566" of your website :-)
>From Phill's website:
"A small piece of volcanic rock, from a site in England with historic
links to Charles Darwin and Lord John Cadman , was launched to the MIR
Space Station on 13th August 1998 as a tribute to them . Additionally,it
is viewed as a "..token.." from our millennium to inspire the continued
exploration of space by human beings during the third millennium.
Over the centuries rocks and stones have been used in a variety of ways
by human beings to "..leave their mark.." for future generations. For
instance, cave paintings, the Rosetta Stone,Stonehenge ,The Pyramids ,
stone circles, the Blarney stone, the Scone stone and many more similar
examples. Rocks and stones have,of course, played a significant role in
religious and spiritual ceremonies with such examples as 'altar stones',
the 'Ten Commandmants Tablet', the Hopi Prophecy Stone or the Islamic
Mohammed 'angel stone' at Mecca. Even today, rocks play a major part in
human culture, manifesting themselves in the form of jewelry such as
rings, bracelets or necklaces that contain exotic stones . In this era as
we begin to explore space the human fascination with rocks has continued
to the planets since, in recent years, we have viewed the famous Apollo
'Genesis' Moon rock , the numerous rocks seen at the Pathfinder landing
site on Mars with colourful names like 'Yogi Bear' or 'Flat Top' or seen
the examination of the so-called ALH-84001 'fossil-life' meteorite. We
are even concerned that a large asteroid rock chunk from space may
impact Earth - threatening our very existence - just as may
have happened with the dinosaurs millions of years ago. During its long
flight in space the Millennium Rock will over-fly the majority of the
human population. As people look up into the clear night sky to view
the moving silvery star, that is the MIR space station with its
Millennium Rock payload , it is hoped that it will inspire people to
make wishes for themselves for the coming Third Millennium."
Cheers,
Bernd
