The famous Canterbury sighting may also have been a brief highly explosive
pyroclastic eruption (known to propel ejecta in excess of lunar escape
velocity), especially since 'Giordano Bruno' is considered to have been
formed long before the 12th century. Or maybe the sighting was indeed a
meteor impact which left a crater somewhere near G. Bruno, too small to
seen from Earth using modern telescopes?
I am not sure if anyone has ever seriously studied the Lunar Orbiter or
Apollo (or other) images for an elusive "young" crater around G. Bruno? A
good armchair-astronomy observation project since Orbiter images are
available for purchase! (I am assuming Orbiter's camera covered that
region of the Moon.)
In the book "Cosmos," Sagan also reported the well-publicized discovery that
the Moon's interior is still reverberating like a struck bell, evidence he
and others believed was sign of a "recent" lunar impact. Trivial pursuit:
The Canterbury monks sighting the supposed lunar impact is dramatized in an
episode of the PBS-TV series "Cosmos," available on videotape (not sure
which episode).
