Hi:
If the topics are related to discussions about, broadly, planetary
science--i.e., especially meteorites, their petrology, their origin, their
relation to the origin and formation of the solar system, their relationship
to planetary environments, news about the collecting hobby, etc., then I say
we're ok. All other discussions really wouldn't fit here. (I.e., UFOs, an
interesting albeit controversial topic, has NO place here. There are lots
of other forums on the Internet for discussions of this subject--in fact, it
so dominates the mass media that I think we should try to exclude it here
and make clear our editorial guidelines for participation in the discussion
group.)
However, I think under the topics of meteorites/planetary science, we should
be open to all level of questions and challenging discussions from amateurs
to professionals--if a NASA scientist makes a claim about something in this
area, and a member cares to question it or has another idea, what's the harm
with that? I see a "discussion group" as just that--a place where things,
related to the topic, are discussed!
Unless a supposed UFO sighting turns out later to be a bolide, say, then
there's just NO connection with our interests here. But the question of
life on Mars or elsewhere in our solar system--and any light shed on these
ideas by what is found in the anlaysis of meteorites--has direct relevance
here. But naturally we can't all agree on official or unofficial data
presented, so we may--from time to time--challenge or question things.
Well, that's my three cents!
