Four people e-mailed me about this, so here's more info for others who are
interested--
Yes, E.C.T. Chao was the 1992 Barringer Medal Winner.
Anyhow, Chao's USGS paper (USGS Bulletin 2050) on the K-T extinctions is
available for $2.50 from the USGS Publications Office
(http://mapping.usgs.gov/esic/) or much easier to just call the USGS' Earth
Science Information Center in Denver at 303-202-4200 to place a credit card
order.--Lou

FYI: For those interested in the iridium and mass extinction at the K-T
boundary, I refer you to this excellent U.S.G.S. publication written by Ed
Chao, the discoverer of coesite. It should be available in most university
science or geology libraries.
AUTHOR: Chao, E. C. T.
TITLE: Comparison of the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary impact events and the
0.77-Ma Australasian tektite event : relevance to mass extinction / by
E.C.T. Chao.
PUBLISHER: [Reston, Va.] : U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological
Survey ; Denver, CO : For sale by Map Distribution, 1993. DESCRIPTN: iv, 22
p. : ill., maps ; 28 cm. SERIES: U.S. Geological Survey bulletin 2050 NOTE:
Title on p. [4] of cover: Comparison of the K-T boundary impact events
and the Australasian tektite event.

SUMMARY: "Reinterpretation of iridium anomalies, shocked quartz, and
microtektites attributed to cratering events in Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary
sections. Evidence from the Ries crater of Germany and Australasian tektites
is essential to understanding giant craters and mass extinction."
