Hello Frank and list,
While I agree with your premise of taking the opposite view for the purpose
of exposing all avenues in an argument, starting an argument here and now
instead of
writing as many letters to this astronomy club as we individually can, is
counterproductive, distracting and time-consuming. (I hope
everyone has sent a letter to AL as he requested.) This is not a time to
argue for the sake of arguing. I view this banning of the sale of
meteorites by an astronomy club a major crack in the dam.
And while I do appreciate your rhetoric, I believe the following sentences
juxtaposed as they are, represent a major oxymoron: 1."As regards to the
purchase, and selling of meteorites, I have basicly no
opinion. 2. I think that science should come first, and institutions
should
not have to pay for their samples. "
No one disagrees that science should come first. It always does. The
meteorite collectors, dealers and hunters are the field scientists - that
branch of the equation that, in fact, is the( Earthly) source of the entire
field of the study of meteoritics. Take us away and there are no
meteorites for
the laboratory scientists to study. It is that simple.
With regard to your suggestion that institutions get free samples, rather
than reasonably priced samples, as most of us want, I find it rather naive,
given the amount of time and effort required by dedicated people to find
one in the first place. Institutions have access to every single meteorite
as it is, as it must go through an institution merely to be classified.
And finally, welcome back, Frank! We've missed you. I love a good
argument.:-)
As Always,
Julia
P.S. Your first geology advisor wasn't the brightest chap, was he?
