re: PV - Ryan and I want to thank everyone that answered our PV etch question.
There's no doubt that it does etch, revealing (according to some) a fine
octahedrite pattern.
re: The unfortunate letter Al M received targeting rogue dealers- This is the
second poison arrow fired at the meteorite "community" in the last couple of
days. It would seem that the fears communicated by many others over the last
months are coming to pass. On Tuesday, USA TODAY ran a letter to the editor
from a Mr. Gerald Fagans of Altoona, PA. titled "Rocks from Mars? Absurd,
implausible" that claims that "It's absurd for NASA to postulate that rocks
found in Antarctica have miraculously found their way to Earth from
Mars.....this hypothesis is simply too fantastic to be plausible....have the
gilded halls of science in their fervent search for coveted grant funds
finally consigned themselves to the tawdry realm of cheap sci-fi
novel?....it's appalling that our tax dollars are being spent to propagate
such tepid sensationalism......Beam me up, Scotty. There's no intelligent life
down here. They've all gone crazy in their fervent race for grant monies."
I e-mailed USATODAY a counter letter which they so far have not found fit to
print.
I live in a "conservative", "religious" community. During shows and while
speaking as an invited guest at the local Universities and nature centers,
I've personally grown weary of politely listening to those who believe that
the Earth is four thousand years old and dinosaurs are extinct because they
fell off of Noah's Ark. These same folks treat my explanations of the origins
of meteorites with mocking disdain. Reaching these people is as unlikely as
Yassir Arafat celebrating Yom Kippur.
The hyenas are barking at the gates and we got no bones to throw 'em. Let
them starve.
