Hello Al,
We all need to see this in it's entirety, as it is uninformed, misguided
notions such as are represented in that letter which we cannot ignore any
longer. Organization of public relations, and a few other goodies have been
screaming out for attention, OK:-), at least, politely nudging us for a
consensus, a beginning of some sort of organization to deal with all of the
pressing matters of this field.
Please forward the text in it's entirety, Al. Thank you for making us
aware that the problem has not gone away.
Best Regards,
Julia Please note - I changed my e-mail address.

|List,
|
|I have just received this notice from a convention I have sold
|meteorites at for a few years. My inital responce was to let them know
|that dealers do quite a lot in the way of education of meteorites as
|well as providing new specimens that would have been lost to science had
|there been no inscentive to look for new specimens. I thought I would
|post part of the message but if the demand is there I will post the
|message in whole for all to see. Your comments about this are welcomed
|and especially from other dealers who might have some thoughts on this.
|
|
|Our club board of directors in the planning stages for the convention
|made
|the decision to strongly discourage meteorite sales at the convention
|and
|all invitations sent to dealers, including those handling various
|merchandise, expressed that policy. The board's sentiments on that
|subject
|have to do with, among other things, controversy involving imports,
|thefts
|of collections, spiraling speculation in the meteorite market that
|threatens scientific study and places these items in the domain of
|gemstones. Many see the use of these items in jewelry and knife blades
|akin to processing rare fossils into expensive nick-nacks. I am sure
|there
|are differing opinions on this, and I am not writing to you to be
|malicious
|or anything, but just to say we have some firm feelings about this.
