Well, what I understand is, that each meteorite found, gets its
"personal" field number (sample number). Lab research then provides
tentative or actual pairings. Thus, the total given for Antarctic
meteorites (as of February 1998 - AMN 21-1, 1998, p. 3) is 7796
classified U.S. Antarctic meteorites (including paired samples like PCA
82518 and its kin.
