Both Gene and Bernd's comments are very excellent and show the danger of too
much heat. Thanks on the post for such an informative, important aspect of the
dangers of too much heat on an iron meteorite.
One comment to say though, too much heat is bad, retaining moisture can also be
destructive. A small amount of heating in the oven (carefully monitored by a
gauge) can drive off moisture and preserve a specimen. An oil bath treatment
and placing the specimen on drier afterword should keep the specimen safe and
dry for some weeks to several months depending on your climate.
