They're salaried staff usually working for universities, museums, and
organizations like the USGS.

Nothing's easy in Antarctica. It's dangerous, exhausting, frustrating - and
you've got to eat about 5,000 calories a day just to keep alive, not to mention
drinking gallons of water (tea and coffee don't count!)
