Ferric chloride is non-caustic, and it doesn't outgas any chlorine like laundry
bleach. It's also a lot safer to handle than nitric acid. However, I've never etched
a meteorite with it, so I don't know what the results will be. It does have a deep
golden color that tends to stain skin, so it might discolor a stone. It is water and
alcohol solvable.
