"breccia" ad infinitum

WELL!   My question elicited some interesting answers....

The city in Italy is spelled Brescia, and, if studying Italian opera libretti
for 25 years counts for anything (?), THAT is pronounced "bresh-ee-ah", with
the accent on the first syllable.  I'm pretty sure that Italians would
pronounce
thusly:  "brescia" = bresh-ee-ah   and "breccia" = bretch-ee-ah.

Is it just me, or is THIS precisely the sort of statement which makes a lot of
us
really disenchanted with academia & "higher learning" these days?!   
"However you pronounce it is OK, dear students, we surely don't want to 
risk damaging your delicate self-esteem by having (shudder) actual standards".
Grrrrrr....

Thanks for the fun responses, all.  Evidently the only thing we have
established is that there IS no consensus.
So, the "carpaccio's" on me!  And for those of you who
are UNDOUBTEDLY thinking right now,  "I'm going to post a complaint about
having to read all this @#%^&*  on the meteorite-list", DO remember that you
have a "delete/ignore" button....
