Newbie Question

I hope that this topic hasn't been discussed to death, but...

Last weekend I found a large odd rock in a state park ( upstate New York). A
piece was coming off and I took it home (OK, I feel guilty, but I had no
magnet with me!). I know very little about meteorites so I could easily be
completely wrong, but it seems to match all the descriptions I've found so far
of a meteorite.

So, who do I call? If it is a meteorite, I assume it's public property if
it's in a state park, and so I'd like to see it properly collected by the
state for whatever purposes they would have (educational or research I hope).
Does anyone else have experience with this kind of thing? Do you think the
state will pay attention to me if I call the parks department and tell them
about it? Would I have better luck calling a university? Should I get a
sample tested on my own before I make a fuss over what might be nothing at
all? Thanks for any advice you can give me...
