Re: interesting Monahans article
Hello Mike and List,
The auction is the least of my concerns at this moment.
There are other pernicious ideas presented obliquely in this article.
They are:
1. The word 'greed' has been associated with meteorite collectors/dealers by yet
another scientist. Scientists have in the past complained about having to
compete with meteorite collectors/dealers for the acquistion of specimens and
that we are the cause of the high prices. This has serious consequences.
2. Everett Gibson is going to announce the dispensation of the other meteorite
before other scientists at the Meteoritical Society in Dublin next week. He will
undoubtedly express his opinion of our community to those in attendance.
3. Rather than being seen as the close knit group that we are, we are portrayed
, not only as greedy with questionable ethics, but as back-stabbing and
bad-mouthing each other openly. This speaks volumes about any group. (The
proverbial chain) Then there is the irresponsiblity factor - for the mishandling
and improper storage of this specimen which could reflect badly on us all in
general.
4. The association has been made in the article that meteorites are commodities
and investments.
For the record, Mike, as one of the 'howlers', I was e-mailed by Steve Arnold
privately, but never responded.
Sincerely,
Julia
