Thanks Martin and Gene (Joel - I look forward to that). I couldn't
help but relate the Sikhote-Alin or 'shrapnel' type tektite to the 'recently'
discovered phenomenon of lightening causing 'dendrites' in the ground;
i.e. branching tree-like structures of glass. Am having difficulty
finding info on the latter, but am curious as to how similar or dissimilar
the composition and structure of this glass is to that of the tektite.
If there is any similarity, could tektites deep within the Earth be of
primordial origin when Earth was forming and the atmosphere was a constant
electrical storm (as I recall)? Further, could the broken,
rounded shape of other tektites simply be due to age, i.e. the newer ones
would appear as shrapnel (broken off branches possibly) the older (rounder)
ones having undergone the entropic processes of nature via exposure to
water, etc.? This is probably all a mute point since the mineral
composition is probably entirely different, but I'm having a difficult
time finding info on dendrites other than the neuro-transmitter type.
Does anyone have info on this? Thanks in advance for any help. jj
