Re: Cutting stones with Dremel
Dear Gaetan,
You will find, for the most part, Dremel tools are excelent for working
with wood and a few other "soft" medeums. You would need a "flexable
shaft" tool for working with stone. That puts it at the price of a
decent 6 inch diamond saw - which I do not consider particularly
expensive, given the job they do! For under $200 you can get a very
decent saw. A flexable shaft ran about $189 some time ago. For $300 you
can get a very fancy saw with the motor built in.
The debate with saws is, do you cut with oil, then go through multiple
chemical processes "removing" it, or with distilled water, then drying
it very quickly (I use the oven - just the piolot light is enough to
drive off all moisture quickly. However, I cut only small quantities. On
very precious material (ie SNCs - anything over $100/g, I cut dry - I
can replace a diamond blade for less than the cost of the material with
which I am working)
If you were to use a batery driven dremel on stone, it would have to be
an infrequent operation. The tools just aren't made to work that hard
for that long a period of time, while a flexible shaft or diamond saw is
DESIGNED to do the work of which you are speaking.
Best wishes, Michael
