If there is a person deserving to go into space who has not had the chance,
I believe the person at the front of the line should be Chuck Yeager. He
was denied entrance into the space program because he did not have college
degree. He was also working on a program called Dynosoar, which was
similar in concept to the current space shuttle program. The main
difference is the Air Force was chasing a horizontal takeoff as well as
landing.
Although science is a priority with space travel and exploration, it seems
there is now room in space for those in other disciplines including
artists, poets, teachers, journalists, etc.. Without other input, including
the humanities, and although one never knows for sure where we are going in
the future, denying other disciplines to participate just ensures we are
positive we don't know where we are going.
Just my non-meteorite two cents.
