Hi all:
On Saturday, August 1, between 3:00 and 4:00 PM (we think) someone managed
to remove a small, iron meteorite from the Museum. This specimen, a horse
shoe-shaped iron, is from Diablo Canyon and weighs in at about 40 pounds.
It was attached opposite a much heavier specimen, with a threaded copper
rod with bolts beneath the housing. This was done so that people could
touch the specimen.
Apparently the individul bent the rod back and forth enought to break it
and removed the meteorite. Witnesses reported a person in the vacinity
with a bookbag shortly before the meteorite was noticed missing.
Unfortunately this describes about 90% of the campus population.
It is doubtful that the specimen will surface but all major meteorite
dealers are being notified.
