Depends on the bullet. A military 7.62mm rifle bullet fired from a
standard military rifle is in the neighborhood of 3000 feet/second. A
.45 caliber pistol bullet is only about 900 fps. A .45 round with a
light charge of powder can actually be less than the speed of sound,
makeing for a quieter round- no supersonic crack.
