Happy Fourth!
A few more comments regarding some discussions that have been appearing in
some of our mailboxes lately:
Censorship -
There is no censorship on this list as it is "un-moderated"; meaning I, as
the list administrator, do not review the posts before they are mailed to
all list recipients. I will at times remove certain messages from the file
archives that I feel do not relate to our mission and thus waste disk space
- these messages are usually either 'spam' ads or single sentence personal
replies to an individual. I believe the individual who has raised this
concern believes -his- messages are being censored as they do not go to all
list members; when in fact - although he is a member of the list, he is not
posting to the list address, but to his own list of a few certain
individuals (you all that are getting his mails!).
Remember -- All posts to the list need to be addressed to:
meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com
Professionalism -
All of us need to realize that we are not only living in a new era of
communication (the Web), but also in a new era of increased interest in
science, space, and especially meteorites. These two factors combined are
superb fodder for mis-information, propaganda, and all sorts of other
on-line negativity. As with any form of media, everything has to taken with
a 'grain of salt'; questioned, discussed, and debated. This list is the
perfect platform for the needed dialog. If you question the validity,
honesty, etc.. of a topic or dealer, ask the list for comments! Most list
members are extremely knowledgable regarding the subjects of discussion;
and many are science professionals.
Well, sorry for the July 4th intrusion but I thought these points should be
made. Any comments are welcomed and appreciated. I will email the
individual mentioned above to let him know the correct list address for
posts, and I'll re-post his previous messages.
Best Regards,
Art Jones
