Re: Spy Stations catch the sound of falling space rocks.
Abstract from: New Scientist, January 11, 1997 v153 n2064 p180
ABSTRACT: Sound detectors designed to spy on clandistine nuclear
explosions can detect and locate the explosion of large meteors in the
atmosphere. Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico measures the
audible low frequency rambling of meteors crashing into the Earth's
atmosphere. The estimates of direction recorded by many detecting
stations provide information regarding the exact location of the bolide.
The sound detectors are useful for scientists investigating on meteors.
However, dashing meteors are too fast to let the detectors provide an
early warning
